It took less than an hour with the Iron Claws for Nina to understand why Caesar would give up his dream for them. They were all so amazingly welcoming and genuine, she felt like she'd known them for years.

“Yahtzee!” Alec yelled, raising a triumphant fist in the air. He had been trying to program his handmade drone to deliver packages to specific individuals based off certain attributes—height, hair color, etc.—he entered into his program. Nina had noticed a tiny coding error that Alec overlooked, and now the little drone was flying around the room, flitting from Big Joe to Emma to Marie as Alec commanded.

“Sometimes it just takes another pair of eyes.” Nina grinned.

“Or maybe Alec isn’t the computer whiz we thought he was,” Emma said, hands busy with a rapidly-lengthening scarf.

“Oh...what’s this?” Alec pointed at the screen of his laptop. “Is this your bank account it just took me less than a minute to hack into?” He tapped experimentally at the keyboard. “I wonder who I should send all this money to...”

Emma put up her knitting needles in surrender. “I take it all back, oh wisest of the computer nerds.”

“Damn straight,” Alec said with a chuckle.

“Hey, can you hack into the Starsound Music Company’s website? I want to see the deal they offered Caesar,” Nina said.

“What?” Dylan nearly dropped his beer bottle, fumbling to catch it.

“Caesar got a record deal? When did this happen?” Emma asked.

Shit. Shit shit shit.

Nina had assumed, since the Claws were so close, he would have told them already.

“Oh crap, guys, sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything.” She wished she could pull the words back into her mouth. “It’s not even an issue. He’s not going to take them up on it.” She pointed vaguely at the door. “That’s why he’s there right now. He popped out to go tell them ‘no’ in person.”

“Why now?” Alec chuckled. “It’s so late, I doubt they’re even open.”

Big Joe’s voice rumbled across the room. “It was only a matter of time. Caesar’s an amazing musician. Somebody was bound to pick up on that.” He shrugged. “If he wants us with him, we can ride alongside his tour bus. And if he doesn’t.” He looked around the room, stopping to give each individual a solid few seconds of eye contact. “We will respect that. Once an Iron Claw...”

“Always an Iron Claw,” the group echoed in response. They placed their hands over their hearts and Nina felt her own heart lighten on Caesar's behalf. They believed in him.

“Guys.” Alec was frantically typing on his laptop. “That’s sweet and all, but I think we’ve got a bigger problem.”

“What is it?” Marie asked. The pretty nurse went over to stand behind Alec's computer.

“I wanted to see what Caesar was giving up for us, so I kind of hacked into the Starsound Music Company’s website.” Alec gestured at his computer. “It’s a shell company. For a shell company. I traced everything back to the source, and you guys aren’t going to believe it.”

“It’s the Council, isn’t it?” Emma’s face was pale.
